We’ll be surveying two mangrove sites — one at Simpsons Creek and one near the Brunswick River boat ramp — during low tide to collect litter data for the NSW EPA’s Key Littered Item Study (KLIS).
This citizen science initiative helps track and reduce plastic waste across the state, contributing to critical EPA targets:
– 30% reduction in plastic litter by 2025
– 60% reduction in total litter by 2030
– 60% reduction in total litter by 2030
Why we need you: Litter audits provide essential insights into the types and sources of waste impacting our waterways. From tangled fishing line to microplastics buried in sediment, the data we collect helps inform effective policies and solutions to prevent waste at the source.
This is your chance to take direct action for marine life in your local community!
What to bring: Water, Hat and Closed-toe shoes (that can get muddy)
Please note: Participation is limited to 10 people as we’ll be working within sensitive mangrove ecosystems.
All volunteers will receive a free reusable water bottle thanks to our partners at RIPL Goods.
