The journey toward effective waste management in the Vizhinjam fishing community has been both challenging and inspiring. Positive Change for Marine Life (PCFML) has been working in the area since 2018 to improve waste disposal practices, and this journey has seen significant growth in community engagement and awareness.
The recent inaugural ceremony of the Direct to Bin Project, organised by the Promise Project of STENUM Asia and PCFML, marked a major milestone in this ongoing effort.
From Rice Bags to Professional Bins
When PCFML first introduced waste management practices in the community, the initial method involved using rice bags to collect and store waste. However, there was significant resistance to this approach.
Community members were concerned about the effectiveness of rice bags, with some pointing out that the bags would break easily under the sun and when exposed to the rain. Others worried about the potential smell and cleanliness issues if not used properly, mainly since the community was not accustomed to separating waste at the time.
Now, with the introduction of hard, professional bins, the attitude has completely changed. The bins are sturdy and practical, and the community is much more willing to embrace them.
Challenges Solved by the New Bin System
- Using Rice Bags: Rice bags would deteriorate quickly, especially when exposed to the sun. They also added to the growing waste pile. With the introduction of these new bins, rice bags can be stored properly, reducing damage and waste.
- Preventing Wet Waste: The monsoon season often made waste wet and difficult to sort, making it harder for the community to handle waste appropriately. With the new bins, waste can be stored in dry conditions, making it easier to manage.
- Educational Impact for Children: The new bins also provide an opportunity for children in the community to learn proper waste disposal practices, creating a more sustainable waste culture for future generations.
The Direct to Bin Project is just one step in the ongoing effort to create a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Vizhinjam fishing community. With the introduction of bins and the waste-to-wealth initiative, there is a renewed sense of optimism and commitment to protecting the environment.
