Restoring Blue Forests in NSW: PCFML and Green Nutritionals Partnership Supporting Coastal Restoration

In the heart of the Cape Byron Marine Park in northern NSW, coastal ecosystems including mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrass meadows continue to face increasing pressure from development, pollution, altered hydrology and climate impacts. These interconnected “blue forest” ecosystems play a critical role in stabilising coastlines, improving water quality, storing carbon and supporting biodiversity across estuaries and nearshore environments. They are also a vital breeding ground for some of the incredible diversity of life that calls the Marine Park home.

Through our Rewilding our Floodplains program, PCFML is working with local communities, restoration practitioners and regional partners to support practical, place-based restoration activities across key coastal and floodplain systems in NSW.

This work includes habitat restoration, Traditional Custodian partnerships and broad community engagement, catchment stewardship, clean-up activities and longer-term efforts to strengthen ecosystem resilience from the mountains to the sea.

We are proud to be partnering with Green Nutritionals, whose ongoing support is contributing to this work on the ground. Through a quarterly sales-linked partnership contribution via the 1% for the Planet network, Green Nutritionals is supporting PCFML’s restoration and community engagement activities throughout the Brunswick River Catchment and Cape Byron Marine Park.

Partnerships like this help strengthen the long-term delivery of practical conservation initiatives by supporting on-ground works, volunteer engagement, Connection to Country work through our Traditional Custodian partners, communications and broader ecosystem restoration efforts. In the first quarter of the partnership, this support helped contribute to cultural sharing and habitat enrichment activities with our partners at Country As Teacher, with over 30 participants, supplementary planting along sensitive riparian corridors, nest box installation with our friends at Wild BnB, Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine plantings, and a Clean Up Australia Day event that removed more than 30kg of waste from the Brunswick River.

Over the coming year, the PCFML team will continue sharing updates from restoration sites and community activities across the region as the partnership progresses.
