Fishing for Change Program Leader

Shruthi is from Kerala, India but grew up and spent most of her life in Chennai. She is an ecologist and researcher working in the field of biodiversity conservation with a Bachelors in Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology and Masters in Environmental Studies and Resource Management. During this time, she worked on different projects such as on wildlife rehabilitation and on cave dwelling bats in the tropical evergreen forests.

Over the past few years she has been working on marine conservation with a focus on elasmobranchs (sharks, rays and skates) and sustainable fisheries along the Indian coast. Moving to aquatic projects she realised how little we know of the underwater world even though it sustains a vast majority of the population. It is important that conservation actions and studies inform wildlife policy, awareness and management measures.

She is also a member of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network and one of the coordinators of its India chapter – Indian Youth Biodiversity Network (IYBN). Through IYBN she hopes to build capacity and bring youth voices to decision making spaces and processes for biodiversity conservation. She got to know about PCFML at COP15 and looks to help with long term fisheries monitoring programs that will ensure a balance between species conservation and community livelihoods.

Our global programs need your support, help us make positive change for people and planet.
