Gold Coast taking up the challenge
Over the past few years Positive Change for Marine Life has run a number of events in the Gold Coast region to raise awareness of, and mitigate the long-term impacts of marine debris on marine ecosystems. Late last year we took part in the first ever Eco Market in Southport on the Gold Coast. We raised over $800 from our stall alone and had nearly 40 people sign-up to volunteer!
The enthusiasm of locals was so much so, that we decided to form an ongoing team on the Gold Coast in mid-2017 who are focused on mitigating marine debris through regular beach surveys at Miami Headland, as well as a number of other initiatives, including our River Warriors program. education workshops and community outreach programs.
To date the team has collected over 18,000 pieces of debris from regular fortnightly surveys at Miami Headland and Burleigh Heads.
