Terranora Creek is one of the most important inlets to the Tweed River. Meeting close to the mouth of the Tweed, Terranora Creek’s drainage basin includes significant urban and agricultural areas. Thanks to funding from Tweed Shire Council, we are conducting a pilot River Warriors Survey on the creek.

Over the course of 4 kayak-based surveys on the Terranora Creek, we will cover more than 8km of waterways and canals - collecting all reachable debris. This will be removed, sorted and analysed - providing valuable insight into the quantity and type of debris on the waterway.

We will gain valuable insight into how plastic pollution and other forms of marine debris are affecting the waterway, as well as identifying possible hot-spots, sources and areas of concern. This pilot survey will produce a marine debris report card, providing a clear, easily understood snapshot of how badly affected the creek is by marine debris, and providing a baseline for any future surveys.

This pilot will provide a platform for future work on the river, which we hope will lead to a full River Warriors project on Terranora Creek and/or other waterways across the Tweed Shire. The training, experience and understanding gained on these surveys will also inform the possible creation of a dedicated River Warriors team for work across the Tweed Shire.

All of the debris and waste pictured was from a short stretch, just over 1km in length on the Terranora Creek.
