Our River Warriors Brunswick River project was launched in 2019 thanks to an Environmental Sustainability grant from Patagonia. This was the first River Warriors project which engaged the public in the surveys, connecting them to the problem and potential solutions first-hand.
Phase I of the project collected 5,621 pieces of debris, weighing in at 762kg from just a 5.7km stretch of the river! The river scored an F+ overall on our Marine Debris Report Card.
You can find out more about the River Warriors Brunswick River project through our Phase I Report and Report Card below:
We are excited to have received additional funding from Australian Ethical Super, Byron Shire Council and The Commonwealth Government to commence Phase II, which has enabled River Warriors to develop a whole-of-ecosystem approach.
In this we will be able to assess factors such as water quality, river bank erosion, vegetation cover as well as marine debris and plastic pollution. This data will help to inform all groups working on the health of the river, strengthening these partnerships and driving further collaboration and synergy.
