River Warriors Marine Debris Report Card Launch - Tallebudgera

  • Gold Coast Recreation Centre 1525 Gold Coast Highway Palm Beach, QLD, 4221 Australia (map)

For almost 7 years Positive Change for Marine Life has engaged with local communities in Australia, and across the globe to find solutions to pressing issues facing marine ecosystems. With around 8 million metric tons of plastic making its way into the ocean annually, we are encouraging the Gold Coast community to take action to assist in efforts to protect the coast's diverse and beautiful waterways.

Over the past six months our Gold Coast Team have run weekly kayak-based surveys on Tallebudgera Creek to collect data and trends on marine debris and pollution. 16 ongoing volunteers assisted in removing and recording over one and a half tonnes of rubbish from the waterway, with a total of 22,925 individual items found across 24 surveys. The findings show accumulation hotspots along the river and identify the major sources of debris. They will enable us to develop targeted strategies to tackle the issue at its source, alongside a variety of stakeholders as the project enters into its second phase this March.

On Thursday February 28 we will host a free event outlining the findings of Phase I of our River Warriors project on the waterway. The night will mark the release of our Marine Debris Report Card, as well as a discussion on potential solutions to the issue. Join the PCFML Gold Coast team to hear more about our vital work on the estuary, as well as how you can become an integral part of this vital project!
