Positive Change for Marine Life has been lucky enough to be nominated for one of Southern Cross Credit Union’s (SCCU) Community Grants! Every year SCCU provides three one-off grants to support small and medium sized local not-for-profit organisations.

We’ve been short-listed to use the grant money towards our Source to Sea education programs, a part of our Activ8 for the Ocean and River Warriors initiatives.

Our Activ8 for the Ocean team raising awareness in Byron Bay.

To date, our Byron Bay Activ8 team has focused on the local community, working with Byron Bay High School to implement adequate waste and recycling facilities, whilst increasing the knowledge-base of staff and students. Our River Warriors initiative has been implementing with kayak-based surveys in waterways throughout northern NSW and south-east QLD, collecting baseline data on marine debris and then utilising our findings to work with a variety of stakeholders to address the issue at its source.

With the SCCU grant, we plan on working with two local schools who are in close proximity of the Brunswick River on a series of education programs and practically-based (on-water) workshops. These workshops will outline the importance that waterways play in ensuring healthy oceans and communities. They will also examine the issues that marine debris and pollution are having on the Brunswick River, the sources of this pollution and ways in which the students can create and inspire long-term change to keep their waterways pollution free.

At the conclusion of the program, both schools will host a public-facing art exhibition to further engage the community on the issues and ways in which they can work together to ensure a healthier waterway!
