We have successfully implemented the first monitored multi-stream waste bins in the fishing communities of Kottappuram and Vizhinjam in India.
Our two trial systems are now available for up to 500 families to use. Each consists of 4 bins - soft plastics, hard plastics, metals and paper/cardboard. Our local Coordinator Krishna KS has been leading our team to educate local community members, particularly women, on the benefits of the systems and how they work. This includes segregating, washing and disposing of items correctly.
The next step of the project is to sort and categorise the waste in each bin to assess exactly what items are being dumped and to work with the community to ensure that they know exactly how to use the system without contaminating the waste stream. We'll also be rolling out a household collection service to 10 households in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for more as we work with the community towards a waste-free future and a plastic-free sea!
