USAID Funding Cut – What this means for our work.

After years of building a grassroots waste management program that empowers local communities, our USAID funding has officially been cancelled. This means that our work — and the livelihoods of the people behind it — will no longer be supported unless we find urgent alternative funding.

One of those people is Jerold Bruno.

Jerold Bruno

Meet Jerold: Youth Leader, Waste Warrior, Ocean Protector

Originally from the beautiful Marovo Lagoon, Jerold Bruno is one of the inspiring individuals working with Positive Change for Marine Life’s waste collection team. Through his role, Jerold helps turn household waste into compost using black soldier fly larvae — a solution that not only reduces pollution but also brings income and dignity to local families.

When Jerold isn’t collecting waste and leading by example, you’ll find him cooking and listening to music. But it’s his passion for protecting the environment and shifting social norms that truly sets him apart.

Rubbish is found everywhere. People practice poor waste management. I want to be an example for all young boys and men — that cleaning our homes is everyone’s job, not just for women and girls.

For Jerold, this work has taught him how to care for his country, his household, and the natural world around him. The income he earns supports his family, covering essentials like food and daily expenses. But more than that, it’s helped him find purpose.

“A lot of young people in the Solomon Islands neglect this kind of work. But I’m proud to be someone who takes responsibility. The ocean’s life depends on our hands. We are the future generation — and if we don’t act now, our resources will disappear.”

The Reality We Now Face

With the end of USAID funding, Jerold and many other dedicated workers are at risk of losing their jobs in the next two months. This program is their only source of income.

If we can’t bridge the funding gap, waste will once again pile up in the streets, flow into the sea, and undo the years of environmental progress and social empowerment we’ve built together.

We have come so far — thanks to community-led action, innovative solutions, and people like Jerold. Now, more than ever, we need your support to keep this momentum alive.
