Earth Day: Celebrating Positive Impact on our Beautiful Planet

2020 marks the 50 year anniversary of Earth Day, providing an excellent opportunity to help our community understand the positive impact that they can have on our planet through making conscious decisions to protect it. Even small actions can make a HUGE difference!

Now in our 8th year, we’re celebrating some of the positive results we've achieved through the relentless hard work of so many people who have helped shape our programs.

We took a look back at 2019 and explored some of the key highlights of how our projects positively impacted our the ocean and the communities who rely on it for survival.

In no particular order, we’re immensely proud that we were able to:

1. Kick-start our household and business waste collection service in India - now collecting 5 recyclable waste streams from over 100 households and businesses!

2. Run over 40 community education programs and workshops with participants from over 20 countries!

3. Prevent an estimated 60 million pieces of plastic from entering the marine environment!

4. Collect and record over 22,500 INDIVIDUAL pieces of debris from rivers, reefs and beaches across Australia and India!

5. Contribute towards lobbying for a single-use plastic ban across the state of Kerala and winning (ban took effect from January 1, 2020)!!

6. Transition an entire community of street and beach vendors from single-use plastics towards local sustainable alternative and re-usable products in India - removing an estimated 65,000 pieces of single-use plastic from entering the ocean every month!

7. Engage over 1200 volunteers, 3000 event participants and employ 5 staff, as well as >40 local women in fishing villages in India.

8. Release our first 2 River Warriors Reports and Marine Debris Report Cards, with 4 River Warriors projects now in operation in NSW and QLD, Australia.

No matter how small, every conscious effort to protect our planet makes a difference. We hope you're making yours today and celebrating all that nature provides.

Happy Earth Day!
