Bare Witness Part 1: What Does Byron's Litter Really Look Like?

  • The Great Northern Hotel Byron Bay Australia

In collaboration with Mullum Cares, come and join us as we examine what Byron's trash really looks like under the cover of darkness.

Did you know that a team of cleaners are paid to get rid of all the litter in Byron Bay before the sun rises each day?

A lot of this waste still makes its way to our drains and waterways, often ending up in the ocean, especially when it's raining! We see the solution as stopping litter at it's souce, rather than cleaning it up post-fact. That's why for our first action of Plastic Free July Mullum Cares and Positive Change for Marine Life have co-ordinated with the Byron Shire Council to divert all the litter cleaned up so we can do a REAL audit of a typical Saturday night's random discards!

We are going to see for ourselves what the streets look like at 2 am before the street cleaning teams come through and then return (after some shut eye) to count the waste collected by the street cleaners and the street sweeper out at the Myocum tip!

A second event is being created to cover the audit task from 10am - 1pm on Sunday July 2. Will you join us under the cover of darkness to see what Byron really looks like before the community wakes up to clean streets each morning?

Let's be a part of the solution and expose this problem, stop it at it's source and explore solutions that lead to positive outcomes and less litter in Byron and beyond!
